    Summary

    The Internship Program is designed to provide students enrolled in a wide variety of educational institutions, from high school to graduate level, with opportunities to work in agencies and explore Federal careers while still in school and while getting paid for the work performed. This Student Trainee position will be filled as an Intern appointment. The appointment is indefinite and is expected to last for the duration of the student's academic attendance.

    Responsibilities

    • This position is designed to provide a career-oriented introduction to the background, philosophy, concepts, and scope of the Forest Service Law Enforcement programs and a practical understanding of the policies of the employing organization.
    • Assignments are developmental in nature and in conjunction with formal education; the employee will gain the necessary competencies for a career in Law Enforcement.
    • Work assignments are selected to ensure that the employee receives on-the-job training and exposure to one or more program functions.
    • Receives on-the-job and formal/informal classroom training in the application of concepts, principles, practice and procedures of law enforcement, security, and force protection programs.
    • Performs a variety of duties or operations in accordance with established law enforcement and security methods and procedures.
    • Assists professional staff with projects involving liaison with law enforcement agencies and the development of procedures and policies.
    • Typical assignments may involve the following:
    • Drafting a criminal investigation plan for the criminal investigation office for use by senior investigators (a guide on what to do and who to call).
    • Accompanying the criminal investigator at law enforcement meetings to gain external policing exposure.
    • Assisting with administrative duties in the criminal investigation office.
    • Assisting the senior investigators with training issues impacting the law enforcement officers i.e., training policy vs. available training sites, costs, impact on the department.

    Travel Required

    50% or less - Travel to different regions throughout the Forest Service organization for rotational training each year is required.
